Asbury Park Press, October 17, 2010 - Moving to a World Beat

Karen Emslie discovered the benefits of hula dancing while vacationing in Hawaii 20 years ago.  Now, she's a hula instructor, based in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

For an equally fun but lower-impact workout packed full of benefits, Karen Emslie suggests an exercise inspired by a tropical paradise-hula.  Emslie discovered the activity while on vacation in Hawaii 20 years ago, and today she teaches all types of Polynesian dance as well as "Hula for Health" fitness classes at the Bayshore Academy of Dance in Holmdel and Dance Impressions in Colts Neck.

"It is so much fun - the music is wonderful, and it is really a beautiful art," Emslie said. "It's a fun way to exercise when you are looking for something different."

Polynesia is a large group of islands in the Pacific Oeean which includes Hawaii,  New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti.  Emslie said although the islands all share a similar style of dance and music, each brings something unique to the culture.  Tahitian dance, for example, which Emslie said many people confuse for hula, uses sharp back and forth hip movements to quick music, while traditional hula uses much slower hip movements and is more focused on using the hands to tell a story.

Because there are so many different cultures involved in Polynesian dance, Emslie is able to use a wide variety of music as well as props in her classes.  These include the "poi ball" a prop from New Zealand that looks similar to a small softball on a string and is spun around in patterns with the hands.

"You really tone your arms using the poi balls," Emslie said.  She also said that many of her students choose hula because the nature of the dance gets them moving without putting a lot of strain on the body.  Emslie has even taught senior citizens in nursing homes a modified version of the dance.  "Hula is excellent as a workout because it is not strenuous and it is a low impact aerobic exercise," Emslie said "Anyone can do it."
